Toolbox Talk – Asbestos – July 2021

Asbestos was a commonly used building product up until the mid 1980’s when it was discovered that breathing in the fibres from the product caused severe health problems. Asbestos is no longer used in building and construction however it is still present in many buildings, infrastructure and vehicles.

In a rail environment, workers should be alert to the presence of asbestos whether they are working on rolling stock or on tracks. Asbestos was commonly used as insulation on steam or diesel vehicles, and could also be found in carriages.
